The St. Paul curriculum is composed of the following subject areas: Catholic religion, language arts, math, science, social studies, and physical education. In addition to the core subjects, French and Spanish, art, music, library and computer literacy are offered. Catholicism is essential and central to the curriculum of St Paul School. Thus, students have a period of Catholic Religion each school day as well as immersion of religion in each class.
In our efforts to continue to grow as an educational institution, St. Paul is establishing a spiraling curriculum that builds upon the previous years knowledge and prepares each child for the next school year. Therefore, the school selects a curriculum for each subject and this curriculum is used throughout the grades. This helps to eliminate 'holes'/weaknesses in academic areas. This integrated curriculum requires instruction that does not focus only on skill drills, but on higher-level thinking. As a result, students are expected to apply and transfer knowledge. These high expectations will prepare the students, in grades 3-8, for the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) Therefore, as parents, one can expect to see more writing and project-based activities instead of simple fill-in-the-blank worksheet activities. Also, one can expect to see more integration of technology into instruction.
Technology is integrated into the curriculum and instruction through the computer lab, a library research center, and two student computers in each classroom. The computer lab has a full-time multi-media instructor who works with the classroom teachers by teaching technology skills that range from basic keyboarding to designing interactive, multi-media presentations.
St. Paul strives to help all students achieve academic excellence. Therefore, St. Paul students in grades 2-8, participate in Escambia county's PATS program.
